Peter Zalmayev’s Solomon Islands visit highlights the global ramifications of the Russia-Ukraine war on economies and livelihoods.
Ukrainian-American journalist Peter Zalmayev, Director of the Eurasia Democracy Initiative in Kyiv, Ukraine, is in the Solomon Islands to raise awareness on the global implications of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. He highlighted how the conflict, while centered in Europe, has far-reaching effects on economies and livelihoods worldwide, including in the Pacific.
During his visit, Zalmayev traveled to communities in Malaita, Central Islands, Western and Choiseul provinces, engaging with local residents and meeting with leaders. In an interview with Tavuli News, he observed that many Solomon Islanders are aware of the war and expressed support for Ukraine.
“The war is impacting fuel prices and the cost of goods, which are concerns for communities here,” Zalmayev said. He described Russia as an “authoritarian state” and its president, Vladimir Putin, as “not in a right sense of mind.” He emphasized the importance of global leaders understanding the broader consequences of the conflict.
Zalmayev’s mission includes extensive media engagement, appearing on international platforms such as BBC, Al Jazeera, ABC, and others to share insights on the war’s impact and advocate for Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty. In addition to being interviewed, Zalmayev writes opinion pieces and hosts his own show, using these platforms to amplify Ukraine’s call for global solidarity. He also met various leaders in his mission around the world including the Pacific.
His travel plans in the Pacific, however, faced challenges. Solomon Islands immigration authorities in Western Province denied him permission to travel to Papua New Guinea via the traditional route by boat. He is now awaiting a flight to Honiara, where he plans to leave the country upon arrival.
While acknowledging that international intervention in the conflict remains limited, Zalmayev stated that peace depends on decisions made by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
