Solomon Airlines connects Auckland to Brisbane with its historic inaugural flight, expanding regional travel options.
“I feel so humbled and honoured to be one of the first passengers onboard this route,” said Kerry, a passenger on Solomon Airlines’ inaugural flight from Auckland to Brisbane. “We just found this route on the website and made our booking. It is so convenient for us, especially arriving during the day, where we will then go onto Darwin.”
For passengers like Kerry, the new flight is simply a practical travel option, offering convenience and direct connections. However, for Solomon Airlines, it represents a significant achievement in expanding the airline’s regional network.
The Solomon Islands, an archipelago located in the South Pacific, is made up of over 900 islands known for their rich history and diverse culture. The country, which gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1978, is home to vibrant communities with a deep connection to the land and sea. Its people speak more than 70 languages, and the nation’s culture is expressed through music, dance, and traditions passed down through generations.
The Solomon Islands is also home to some of the world’s most pristine coral reefs, making it a popular destination for divers and environmental enthusiasts. Recently, the Solomon Islands made world headlines with the discovery of the largest coral reef in the world, located off Three Sisters Island in Makira Ulawa Province in the eastern part of the country.

Despite its remote location, the Solomon Islands plays an essential role in regional cooperation and trade, with tourism, agriculture, and fisheries being key pillars of its economy.
The new Auckland to Brisbane flight marks Solomon Airlines’ first-ever direct trans-Tasman service. This new route strengthens the airline’s connections between the Solomon Islands, New Zealand, and Australia. Established in 1962, Solomon Airlines has long been the national carrier, connecting the island nation to other parts of the Pacific and beyond.
John Wopereis, the Commercial Manager of Solomon Airlines, emphasized the importance of this new route for the airline. “It feels great to represent the country, and we’re proud to see Solomon Airlines standing tall among other airlines in the region,” he said. While competing with major carriers like Qantas, Air New Zealand, and Jetstar, Wopereis highlighted the airline’s unique advantages, including more legroom for passengers.
The inaugural flight was celebrated with a cultural performance at Auckland International Airport. Passengers received special certificates to commemorate the historic event, marking this important milestone for the airline and the Solomon Islands.

Despite this success, Solomon Airlines faces challenges in the aviation sector. Operating in a geographically isolated region presents logistical and financial hurdles. Maintaining international connectivity and ensuring sustainability of services are some of the key difficulties the airline continues to navigate.
As Miss Solomon Islands, Elsie Polosovai, said, “It’s good to have the option with Solomon Airlines. I feel proud to see our national airline expanding its routes.” The airline’s efforts help promote tourism, foster regional relationships, and contribute to the economic development of the Solomon Islands.
The new service operates weekly, with flights departing Auckland every Friday at 6:30 am and arriving in Brisbane at 7:15 am local time. The return flight leaves Brisbane at 6:50 pm and arrives in Auckland at 12:55 am on Saturday.
