Opposition Leader Matthew Wale raises concerns over the lack of government funding for law enforcement and judicial agencies.
Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Matthew Wale, has criticized the government over its lack of commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies, following reports of financial constraints affecting the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF).
Wale was responding to a recent Island Sun report quoting DPP Director Andrew Kelesi, who revealed that his office lacks the necessary funds to run trials. According to Kelesi, some cases have had to be vacated due to financial shortfalls.
Wale described the situation as concerning, particularly given the number of high-profile financial cases under investigation.
“This is a red flag. With revelations from recent audit reports and ongoing allegations of corruption, public confidence in the system is at risk,” he said.
He urged the Ministry of Justice to address the issue urgently, emphasizing the need to support the DPP to ensure trials proceed and to strengthen its capacity in handling white-collar crime.
The Opposition Leader also pointed to similar challenges faced by the RSIPF, stating that his office had received reliable reports indicating that police operations are being hampered by logistical and financial constraints.
“My office has been informed that the police face either little or no government support, making it difficult for them to carry out their work effectively. Major investigations have either stalled or been delayed due to insufficient resources,” Hon. Wale said.
He stressed the critical role of investigators and prosecutors in the judicial system and called on the government to provide adequate financial backing to law enforcement agencies.
“Substantial investment is needed in the police and judiciary to ensure they can effectively carry out their responsibilities. Public confidence in these institutions depends on their ability to deliver justice, which is directly linked to government support,” he said.
Wale also highlighted the importance of policing as a fundamental sector alongside education and health, urging the government to demonstrate stronger commitment.
“This is especially concerning given the scale of ongoing investigations, such as the Economic Stimulus Package (ESP) and other corruption-related cases,” he said.
Despite these challenges, Wale acknowledged the dedication of the DPP and RSIPF officers, commending them for their continued service to the country.
