Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has congratulated women in Solomon Islands’ for various achievements in the areas of social, economic, culture and politics.
The Prime Minister said women played a crucial role in society to ensure we have shared responsibility and shared ownership of our destiny as a country.
PM Sogavare said it elevates the profile of any country when women are given the space to be in the driving seat of development.
He said as the political head of the government he is proud to see women breaking the status quo and holding positions once dominated by men.
The Prime Minister added that this year’s theme “DigitALL: innovation and technology for gender equality” is timely as it calls for women to embrace the benefits of technology in order to advance socially and economically.
Sogavare added that while technology has its advantages, safeguards must be created and promoted to lessen the disadvantages of it.
He said his government values women’s contribution in the social and economic development of the country.
The Prime Minister further pointed out that the government prides itself for having four female members of parliament of which two are government ministers and the other two members of the caucus.
He added that the government so far has appointed three female Permanent Secretaries, the top position in the administration cadre of the government. These women Permanent Secretaries are in the Ministry of Police and National Security, Ministry of National Planning and Development Coordination and Ministry of Health and Medical Services.
Sogavare acknowledged the invaluable services provided by women in the family, community, private sector and public service and encouraged them to continue to excel in their respective areas of service for the good of the country.
