The Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Wale, has strongly condemned the Prime Minister’s statement upon arriving in China, where he referred to the country as his “home.” A video shared on Twitter captured the moment when Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare expressed those words to Chinese government officials, sparking criticism from the office of the Leader of the Opposition.
Wale expressed shock and disappointment at hearing such a statement from the Prime Minister while on foreign soil. He reminded the public that during the recent 45th Independence celebrations, the Prime Minister pledged to pursue an independent foreign policy that avoids taking sides in the geopolitical struggles between China and the United States.
The Opposition Leader argued that the Prime Minister’s remark in Beijing contradicts his earlier commitment to an independent stance. He described the statement as undiplomatic and shameful, emphasizing that it was inappropriate for a Prime Minister to imply such a close personal connection with China.
Wale said the Prime Minister’s comment reveals his true inclinations and raises concerns about his preference for one diplomatic partner over others, without any clear justification known to the public. This not only poses an embarrassment but also casts a negative light on the Solomon Islands’ relationships with other diplomatic allies.
The Opposition Leader called upon the Prime Minister to provide clarification and explanation regarding his “I am back home” statement. He emphasized the importance of the Prime Minister addressing the concerns of the people unless there are undisclosed genetic connections to China that the public is unaware of.
Wale’s remarks highlight the need for transparency and accountability in the Prime Minister’s statements and actions, especially regarding foreign relations. The Opposition urges the government to clarify its position and demonstrate a commitment to a genuinely independent foreign policy that serves the best interests of the Solomon Islands and its people.
