The Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP) is actively addressing the prevalent issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the communities it operates in. Disturbingly, a significant number of women in Solomon Islands have reported experiencing physical and sexual violence from intimate partners and others. In response, SIRAP, with support from the Solomon Islands Government and the World Bank, has implemented a comprehensive strategy consisting of Needs Assessments, Prevention, and Support Services.
To better understand community needs and effectively tackle GBV-related issues, SIRAP has conducted consultations, including key stakeholders such as government officials, law enforcement representatives, healthcare professionals, community welfare advocates, women’s organizations, NGOs, and service providers. These consultations have provided valuable insights for addressing GBV.
SIRAP is taking proactive measures to mitigate GBV within project-related works by implementing GBV Codes of Conduct and providing regular training for workers and managers involved in civil works and airport operations.
In order to enhance support services for victims, SIRAP has extended its support to organizations such as the Western Family Support Centre, the Malaita Care and Counselling Centre, and the Malaita Provincial Women’s Council. These organizations are now better equipped to respond to and assist those in need.
This initiative, which began in 2020 and concluded in June 2023, has made significant progress in combating GBV. The Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2) is currently undertaking infrastructure projects, including bridge construction, airport upgrades, investment in air navigation systems, and regional airport maintenance. SIRAP2 aims to include Santa Cruz in its ongoing GBV initiative.
Through its dedicated efforts, SIRAP is committed to addressing GBV and creating safer communities in the Solomon Islands.
