Solomon Islands and New Zealand strengthen air connectivity with signing of a new air service agreement.
Senior officials from Solomon Islands and New Zealand successfully concluded two-day negotiations to renew their Air Service Agreement (ASA) between the two countries. The signing of the new Air Service Agreement between Solomon Islands and New Zealand will strengthen air connectivity between the two counties. The new ASA, replacing the 1990 agreement, aims to enhance air connectivity and cooperation in the aviation sector. It embraces modern practices in the industry, reflecting a collective vision to strengthen their partnership.
The initialing of the new agreement’s text took place in Honiara on July 20, 2023, with Mr. Collin Beck representing Solomon Islands and Ms. Sonya van der Geer representing New Zealand.
Speaking at the initialing ceremony, Mr. Beck expressed optimism that the new Air Service Agreement will usher in a new era of cooperation and connectivity, strengthening bilateral relations between Solomon Islands and New Zealand.
The agreement’s framework is expected to create increased opportunities for people-to-people connections, drive economic growth, and promote tourism and economic activities in Solomon Islands.
Mr. Beck also acknowledged the contributions of Solomon Islands’ aviation stakeholders, including the Ministry of Communication & Aviation, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Civil Aviation Authority of Solomon Islands, and Solomon Airlines Limited, in ensuring the successful outcome of the ASA negotiations.
In addition to the ASA, a Memorandum of Arrangement was signed by the Chief Negotiators, which will be submitted to their respective Governments for approval and authorization to sign the new Air Service Agreement.
