Opposition Leader Urges PM to investigate PG 2023 Contracts alleging fraudulant activities within the National Hosting Authority.
Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Wale, has called on the Prime Minister to urgently summon the National Hosting Authority (NHA) following alarming allegations of fraud in the awarding of contracts for Pacific Games 2023. Wale emphasized that, as the Minister responsible for the Pacific Games 2023, the Prime Minister MUST intervene and address the issues raised within the NHA.
The Opposition Leader revealed that his office has received numerous complaints concerning grave allegations of corruption surrounding the distribution of contracts to local suppliers and contractors. He expressed deep concern, stating, “My office has been informed that certain individuals within the NHA are awarding highly questionable contracts to their friends and associates, with contract values that are simply staggering. It appears that some individuals within the NHA are exploiting PG 2023 funds for personal gain.”
Furthermore, Wale raised questions about the value and quantity of the Chengs building purchased for PG 2023, suggesting that transparency is needed in this regard. He also noted that the figures related to contracts awarded to certain local contractors and suppliers have raised eyebrows, leading to individuals rapidly amassing wealth for the wrong reasons.
To address the situation and ensure the responsible use of PG 2023 funds, Wale called for a comprehensive audit of PG 2023 funds. Additionally, he urged the Treasury’s internal audit department to expedite their investigations to safeguard public funds from being exhausted through corrupt practices and inflated contracts.
The Opposition Leader stressed the importance of reviewing and potentially terminating contracts that are under scrutiny. He emphasized the necessity of following due process in taking corrective actions.
Solomon Islands will be hosting the Pacific Games from 19 November to 2 December 2023.
