National Emergency Operations Centre Issues Comprehensive Advisory in Response to Special Weather Bulletin Number 4
In response to the latest Special Weather Bulletin Number 4 released by the Solomon Island Meteorological Services (SIMS) at 7:00 am on Monday, December 4, 2023, the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has issued a comprehensive advisory on handling the anticipated heavy rain and flooding. This advisory is applicable to most provinces and islands within the Solomon Islands.
The SIMS warns that heavy rainfall may result in flooding in various areas, including creeks, streams, major rivers, drainages, coastal regions, landslides, and mudslides. The heavy rain, coupled with strong winds, can also lead to rough seas and significantly reduce visibility. Given these potential hazards, individuals are strongly urged to take this advisory seriously.
Recommended Safety Actions:

- Stay tuned to emergency information on SIBC, FM, and HF radio.
- Inform neighbors and vulnerable individuals about the current heavy rain situation.
- Activate response plans and move to safe areas if flood risks increase.
2. For Residents Living Close to Rivers and Shoreline Areas Under the Threat of Flooding:
- Prepare essential items such as radios, mobile phones, flashlights, knives, food, water, important documents, and medicines for potential evacuation.
- Store drinking water in sealed bottles as the water supply may be disrupted.
- Discourage children from playing in the rain and flood-prone areas.
- Activate response plans and evacuate to safe areas if flood risks escalate.
3. For Motorists:
- Exercise caution when traveling on wet, slippery, and flooded roads.
- Be aware of water-covered roads and bridges.
- Ensure lights are on while driving and maintain a speed of less than 40km per hour.
- Increase the following distance due to extended stopping distances on wet roads.
- Avoid attempting to cross flowing rivers and large streams of unknown depth.
4. For Boats and Shipping:
- Mariners are advised to exercise extra caution when planning or undertaking sea travel.
- Avoid sea travel if possible.
- Inform someone of your travel plans and expected time of arrival before venturing into the sea.
- Carry extra fuel, paddles, life jackets, flashlights, spare batteries, water, and food when traveling.
