Solomon Water Unveils 2024 Tariff Overhaul for Enhanced Services
Solomon Water has officially announced a revision in tariffs effective 1 January 2024. The decision, endorsed by the Solomon Islands Government and facilitated through the Minister for Mines, Energy, and Rural Electrification (MMERE), aims to address the increasing challenges faced by the utility in maintaining and enhancing its services.
The new tariff structure introduces an 81-cent per kilolitre (tonne) increment for the lowest domestic tariff band. This adjustment comes after a thorough review, taking into account various factors driving the need for such changes.
Among the key considerations are the escalating costs associated with the delivery of water and wastewater services, including the rising expenses related to electricity, maintenance, and infrastructure development. Solomon Water emphasizes that these adjustments are crucial for sustaining the quality and reliability of water services in the face of these mounting operational challenges.
Additionally, the tariff revision is earmarked to support continuous improvements that Solomon Water plans to undertake in providing safe and reliable water services across its operational areas. The utility company is committed to investing in infrastructure and operational enhancements to meet the growing demand and ensure the welfare of communities it serves.
Loan repayments to the Government for donor-funded water infrastructure projects also played a significant role in the decision to adjust tariffs. Solomon Water acknowledges its responsibility in repaying loans for vital projects that contribute to the expansion and improvement of water services in the region.
Donald Marahare, Chairman of the Solomon Water Board, emphasized the necessity of the tariff increase, stating, “The increase is necessary to ensure the State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) can meet rising operating costs and make required investments to ensure that every household and business in its operating areas has access to safe and reliable water.”
In light of these adjustments, Solomon Water reassures the public that the utility remains committed to its vision of “Safe water for a healthy nation.” The tariff changes are seen as essential steps to sustain and enhance the delivery of water services, aligning with the company’s broader goals of improving value and services for the benefit of the community and ensuring a sustainable future for all.
