Local Police Confirm Unexploded Ordnance Pose No Threat to Public Safety
Police in Honiara have confirmed the safe removal of an unexploded ordnance (UXO) discovered at the Honiara Central Market.
The UXO, believed to be a remnant of World War II, was unearthed during a routine survey conducted as part of the preparations for the market’s expansion on its western end.
According to a spokesperson from Australia’s Solomon Islands Infrastructure Program (SIIP), responsible for overseeing the project, standard safety protocols were immediately implemented upon the discovery. Work was halted, and the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was promptly notified.
“RSIPF attended the site, confirmed there was absolutely no risk of explosion from the single used shell. They subsequently returned and have now removed the shell”, the spokesperson said.
Local contractor Tropic Group Builders will conduct further UXO surveys before proceeding with any excavation or construction activities at the site.
Given the historical context of World War II activities in the Solomon Islands, UXO surveys are standard practice. SIIP emphasized its commitment to prioritizing the safety of workers and the public throughout the construction process.
