Residents Struggle with Access to Clean Water Amidst Ongoing Challenges in Temotu Province

Residents of Lata and Graciosa Bay are facing significant challenges due to the unreliable water supply in their areas. Despite ongoing efforts by the government to improve infrastructure since 2008 through initiatives such as the Provincial Governance Strengthening Programme (PGSP) in collaboration with the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI), issues persist with the Nembo water pump and generator installed in 2009. Consequently, there has been a prolonged cessation of water supply from Graciosa Bay to Lata.
The inconsistent water supply has resulted in difficulties for residents in accessing clean water for essential needs like drinking and cooking. Formerly reliant on the functional water supply, residents now contend with the uncertainties of rainwater, which may not always meet safety standards. Despite efforts, many rural communities in Graciosa Bay and Lata still rely on distant water sources for their daily needs, as there are no nearby streams or rivers. The primary source of fresh water for Graciosa Bay and Lata residents is Nembo, located approximately 8-9 kilometers away from Lata.
Residents have voiced concerns regarding the significant distance to the nearest water source and the health risks associated with using potentially contaminated water. Moreover, the lack of a reliable water supply poses challenges to essential services such as healthcare, as evidenced by the dependence of Lata Hospital on rainwater.
A resident of Lata expressed concern about the persistent water supply issues in the area, emphasizing the need for attention from the Temotu Provincial Government. She shared her family’s struggle, mentioning that although they originally hailed from a different province, they now face difficulties due to her husband’s work in Lata. The unreliable water supply has made it challenging for them, especially when their tank runs empty, as they heavily rely on rainwater.
A community leader from Graciosa Bay highlighted the inadequate water supply and sanitation conditions in their area. He noted that residents are compelled to use poor-quality or unclean water for various purposes, including drinking, washing, and even swimming. Additionally, he raised concerns about the lack of proper sanitation facilities, with many resorting to using the seaside as an alternative to toilets. This practice poses significant health risks, as the sea water is not suitable for such activities.
Additionally, the absence of clean water negatively impacts businesses such as market vendors and motels, posing potential risks to public health and tourism in the province.
Residents are urging swift action from newly elected provincial members and responsible authorities to address the issues with the Nembo water pump and generator. They emphasize the critical importance of prioritizing water supply and sanitation to ensure the well-being of the communities.
Ironically today coincides with World Water Day, with the global community commemorating this occasion under the theme ‘Leveraging Water for Peace’.
