Solomon Islands Secure Semi-Final Spot with 3-0 Victory Against Fiji at OFC U-19 Men’s Championship 2024
The Solomon Islands took a giant step towards securing a semi-final spot in the OFC U-19 Men’s Championship 2024 with a commanding 3-0 victory over Fiji.
Both teams entered the match knowing a win would put them on six points and in strong contention for a place in the final four. The Solomon Islands wasted no time in making their intentions clear, with James Laena finding himself one-on-one with Fiji’s goalkeeper Illisoni Koro early on, though his shot sailed over the crossbar.
Minutes later, Jayroll Patty’s deflected shot forced Koro into a save, but Laena couldn’t capitalize on the rebound. The end-to-end action continued with Laena beating the offside trap, only to send his shot straight at the goalkeeper.
Fiji’s first shot on target came in the 21st minute, with captain Penisoni Tirau unable to chip the ball over the onrushing Gideon Abidan.
The Solomon Islands’ dominance paid off just before halftime when they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. Billy Afi expertly tucked the ball into the bottom corner. As the first half neared its end, a cross from the right found Jimson Abana, who headed the ball over Koro and into the net, securing a well-deserved second goal.
The humid conditions in the second half slowed the pace of the match, allowing Fiji to create more opportunities. Substitute Eparama Moraica provided a spark for Fiji, but their best chance went begging as Moraica’s close-range shot sailed over the goal.
The Solomon Islands sealed their victory in the 83rd minute when Abana scored a stunning scissor kick, wrapping up an emphatic 3-0 win.
The Solomon Islands will face Tahiti in their final group stage match on Thursday, while Fiji will look to regroup before their final match against Vanuatu.
