Isabella Miller prepares for her Olympic debut in the 50m freestyle event while Firisua transitions to 100m sprints for her third Olympics
The Solomon Islands is represented by two athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games: 16-year-old swimmer Isabella Miller and 30-year-old long-distance runner Sharon Firisua.
Isabella Miller, the national swimmer and flag bearer for Team Solomon at the opening ceremony, will make her Olympic debut on August 3rd in the Women’s 50m freestyle, Heat 3. Bella, whose family is well-known in Murwillumbah, attends school and trains at the Tweed Regional Aquatic Centre. Originally from Malaita and Makira and currently residing in Australia, Miller was one of three athletes representing the Solomon Islands at the Oceania Swimming Championships in Queensland, Australia, in April. Her impressive performance there secured her spot at the Paris Olympics.
Sharon Firisua, a long-distance runner now competing in the 100m event, will participate in her third Olympic Games. The preliminary heats for her event begin on August 2nd at 6:35 pm. Firisua made her Olympic debut in the 5000m at Rio 2016 and made history at Tokyo 2020 as the first woman from a Pacific Island nation to compete in an Olympic marathon. This year, she transitions to compete in the 100m sprints.
