Public Advised to Avoid Tinge Ridge Area During Safety Procedure.
The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Explosive Ordnance Disposal Department (EODD) will conduct a Render Safe Procedure (RSP) on a live bomb. The bomb was found at the Hatanga Construction site in the Tinge Ridge area, West Honiara. This operation is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
Acting Director of EODD, Staff Sergeant (SSgt) Peter Ririvere, stated that the procedure will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. He advised workers, farmers, and residents in the surrounding communities of Tasahe, Ngosi, and Tinge Ridge to avoid the area during this time.
SSgt Ririvere added that evacuations and roadblocks will be in place as part of safety measures. He appreciates public cooperation to ensure the operation is completed safely and efficiently.
Mr. Ririvere further recommended that any sightings of unexploded bombs be reported immediately. Residents can call the RSIPF through the toll-free police line at 999 or the RSIPF EOD mobile at 7495215. They can also report to the nearest police station.
Unexploded ordnance (UXO) refers to explosive devices—such as bombs, grenades, and artillery shells—that have been fired or dropped but failed to detonate. The Solomon Islands, a former battleground during World War II, is significantly affected by UXO contamination, with many dangerous remnants left behind. These unexploded devices can pose serious risks to public safety.
