Saunders Reflects on Women’s Progress in the Solomon Islands, Urges Greater Impact.
Lady Keithie Saunders, former US Consular Agent in the Solomon Islands, urged women to focus on action, not just talk, in her address at the Honiara Council of Women’s festival. The event coincided with the 16 Days of Activism campaign. Saunders emphasized that real progress happens when women move from discussion to action in both personal and community development.
Having lived in Honiara since 1964, Saunders reflected on the progress of women in the Solomon Islands. She acknowledged their growth, saying, “I came here as a pikinini and have seen the changes over the 60 years.” Saunders encouraged women to continue pursuing educational opportunities, noting that more resources are now available than ever before. However, she pointed out that despite increased participation in courses and workshops, visible change in the community remains limited. “It’s time to move beyond just talking and start doing,” Saunders said. She urged women to apply their knowledge to create real improvements.
Saunders also addressed environmental issues, particularly climate change. She urged women to take an active role in preserving the environment. “Planting trees is a simple but effective way to improve the environment and create a cooler world,” she stated. Reflecting on her own efforts, she recalled starting tree planting initiatives as part of the Honiara Beautification project more than two decades ago. Despite seeing some trees she planted removed for development, she remains committed to planting more. “Even when trees are cut down, I keep planting,” Saunders said, emphasizing the long-term importance of environmental action.
Saunders encouraged the women to not give up, but continue to strive to provide a good home for their families. She also highlighted the importance of women supporting each other. “We must build strong networks, support one another, and help each other grow,” she said, emphasizing solidarity within families and communities. She said that only by working together, women can see real change in the communities.
