Solomon Islands National Team Dominates Vanuatu in MSG Prime Minister’s Cup Opener.
The Solomon Islands National Team began their defense of the MSG Prime Minister’s Cup 2024 with a dominant 4-1 victory over Vanuatu on Match Day 1 at Lawson Tama Stadium, as reported by the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF).
The Melanesian champions made an electrifying start, with Rovu Boyers converting a penalty to open the scoring. Don Keana followed up with a superb strike, extending the home team’s lead to 2-0 by halftime.
After the break, the Solomon Islands National Team continued their dominant display. Boyers netted his second goal of the game with a precise assist from John Orobulu, finishing into the bottom corner.
Vanuatu fought back with a goal from towering defender Nicolas King, who scored with a chip header over goalkeeper Harold Nauania. However, the Solomon Islands team held firm and maintained their two-goal advantage. Coach Josh Smith’s tactical substitutions midway through the second half ensured they remained in control.
Late in the match, Vanuatu was reduced to 10 men, and the Solomon Islands capitalized on their numerical advantage. Raphael Le’ai, introduced late in the game, provided a pinpoint pass to Keana, who calmly slotted home his second goal into an empty net.
Coach Josh Smith praised the team’s performance: “I give credit to the boys for the victory today. We allowed every player, especially the new ones, to play, and they’ve shown great character. I’m impressed, but we must keep working hard as we have another game to focus on this Thursday.”
In the day’s opening match, Papua New Guinea (PNG) edged out the Solomon Islands Development Team 1-0. Despite the loss, Stanley Waita and Franco Ne’e led a strong performance for the Development Team, pushing the experienced PNG side to their limits. However, the Development Team struggled to find a breakthrough in the final third.
Looking ahead, the senior team will face the Solomon Islands Development Team on Thursday, while Fiji will take on Vanuatu on Match Day 2 of the MSG Prime Minister’s Cup 2024.
The tournament, being held from 9–21 December, is taking place at Lawson Tama Stadium in Honiara. As the defending champions, the Solomon Islands are aiming to retain their title. Teams from Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and Fiji are competing for the title. New Caledonia, originally scheduled to participate, withdrew ahead of the tournament.
