Honiara Musicians and Residents Organize Concerts to Support Vanuatu’s Earthquake Recovery.
Honiara musicians and residents have organized a two-day concert this weekend to raise funds in support of recovery efforts in Vanuatu following the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck off Port Vila on December 17, 2024.
The event, inspired by discussions on social media, kicked off on Saturday, December 21 (today), with performances by secular bands and Christian music groups are scheduled to perform on Sunday, December 22. The concert has brought together musicians, community groups and volunteers from Honiara to contribute to the cause.
In addition to live music, the event features fundraising activities such as BBQs and food stalls. Donations from the community have also been collected during the concert, with Solomon Islanders showing their support for the recovery efforts in Vanuatu.
The earthquake in Vanuatu caused significant damage, particularly in Port Vila and surrounding areas, affecting buildings, bridges, and utilities. Recovery efforts are ongoing, and the Port Vila International Airport is set to reopen for commercial operations on Sunday, December 22, following safety inspections.
The concert in Honiara is part of broader efforts to support Vanuatu in its recovery. The funds raised, including donations made at the event, will be directed toward assisting recovery initiatives in the wake of the earthquake.
Meanwhile, Honiara is also hosting the Vanuatu national men’s football team, who are in the capital for the 2024 MSG Prime Minister’s Cup, which is scheduled to conclude this weekend. The final matches will see Vanuatu facing Papua New Guinea at 4:00 PM, followed by Fiji taking on the Solomon Islands senior men’s national team at 6:00 PM today, Saturday, December 21, at the National Sports Stadium.
