SBD 50 million investment to upgrade Sasape Shipyard in Tulagi promises a significant uplift for domestic maritime transport
Solomon Islands’ domestic shipping industry is set to receive a significant boost with a SBD 50 million investment from Solomon Islands Shipyard Limited (SISL) and the Australian Government to upgrade the Sasape Shipyard in Tulagi, Central Province. This investment aims to enhance vessel maintenance services, ensuring safer maritime transport for the movement of people and goods within the country.
During a visit to the Shipyard, Australian High Commissioner, Mr. Rod Hilton, emphasized the importance of secure maritime transport for Solomon Islands, being a maritime nation. He highlighted Australia’s commitment to partnering with local businesses in Tulagi to not only facilitate the rehabilitation of the shipyard but also to create job opportunities for Tulagi residents.
The Sasape Shipyard, currently the largest employer in Central Province with over thirty staff, is capable of providing slipping facilities for vessels of up to 500 tonnes, as well as a comprehensive range of repair and maintenance services. Upon completion of the rehabilitation works expected next year, the shipyard will be fully equipped to service both domestic and international vessels, positioning the Solomon Islands as a regional hub for vessel maintenance services. This development is anticipated to create more job opportunities for locals and stimulate economic growth.
Australia’s investment of SBD 50 million, facilitated through the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific, is expected to play a vital role in driving economic development in Solomon Islands, empowering its citizens further.
