Australia Solidify New Security Partnership to Strengthen Solomon Islands RSIPF.
Australia and Solomon Islands have announced a new initiative aimed at strengthening the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF), following a request from Solomon Islands. The announcement was made in a joint statement by Prime Ministers Jeremiah Manele and Anthony Albanese. This support follows discussions between the two countries’ Prime Ministers in June 2024.
The support package, which will be guided by Solomon Islands’ priorities, is designed to grow the size and capability of the RSIPF. It includes funding, training, and infrastructure support, with a particular focus on establishing a new Police Training Centre in Honiara. The initiative aims to help Solomon Islands develop a sovereign security capability, reducing its reliance on external partners over time.
The partnership reflects the longstanding relationship between the two countries, with Australia reaffirming its role as Solomon Islands’ security partner of choice. According to the statement, this collaboration is seen as an investment in Solomon Islands’ future, aimed at supporting the country’s security, economic growth, and development priorities.
This announcement builds on over 40 years of cooperation between the two nations, including the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI, 2003-2017) and the Solomons International Assistance Force (SIAF, 2021-2024). Areas of cooperation have included policing, disaster relief, border security, and cyber security.
The new partnership aligns with Solomon Islands’ three-tier security framework, which prioritizes a strengthened RSIPF, support from Melanesian countries, and broader regional collaboration through the Pacific Islands Forum.
Both governments have emphasized their commitment to implementing the partnership in a way that strengthens Solomon Islands’ domestic security while contributing to regional stability.
