British High Commissioner to Solomon Islands and Nauru, Thomas Coward, hosted a farewell reception at his residence on December 4, 2024. He will leave the country on December 15, 2024. Coward first arrived in the Solomon Islands during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The reception welcomed Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele, senior government officials, ministers, civil society members, members of the diplomatic corps and missions and representatives from international NGOs. All had worked closely with Coward during his time in the country.
Coward shared his deep affection for the Solomon Islands. His connection began during his earlier work, where he met his wife. He stressed that the United Kingdom values its relationship with the country. He also highlighted the strong historical, cultural, and religious ties between the countries, especially through their shared church connection.
Coward reflected on key achievements during his tenure. He highlighted the historic visit of UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly in April 2023. This marked the first-ever visit by a UK Foreign Secretary to the Solomon Islands. Coward also mentioned the expansion of BBC Media Action in collaboration with the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC) and the Media Association of Solomon Islands to boost local media capacity.
He also noted the UK’s ongoing support, including the Chevening Scholarships and growing trade ties. UK chocolate producers have visited the Solomon Islands to strengthen cocoa sector links.
The event also featured performances by the St. Barnabas Cathedral Choir of the Anglican Church of Melanesia.
Prime Minister Manele thanked Coward for his contributions to the UK-Solomon Islands partnership. He praised Coward’s engagement with government officials and communities. He also acknowledged the UK’s support in health, education, national security, trade, and culture.
Manele expressed gratitude for the UK’s support in providing opportunities for Solomon Islands youth to join the UK Naval Army. He concluded by wishing Coward and his family well, noting they will always be fondly remembered in the Solomon Islands.
Coward thanked the people of the Solomon Islands for their hospitality. He will carry fond memories of the country and hopes to return one day.
