Buala Wharf redevelopment progresses with new design, geotechnical surveys and expanded capacity to support Isabel’s economy.
The Buala Wharf redevelopment is progressing to the next stage, with initial plans for a longer wharf now under review by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and the Isabel Provincial Government. This ambitious project aims to double the capacity of shipping in and out of Isabel Province, with dedicated space for multiple ships and small boats to berth.
To support the project’s design, a specialist drilling team has carried out geotechnical surveys, collecting ground samples down to 40 meters. They also completed an unexploded ordinance (UXO) survey, providing critical data to shape the final design of the new wharf.
Australian High Commissioner, Rod Hilton emphasized the importance of these investigations. “Building long-lasting infrastructure starts with solid foundations, which are dependent on high-quality investigations by experts,” Hilton said.
Given the Solomon Islands’ history with unexploded ordinances, ensuring safety is paramount. “We’re pleased to report that no unexploded ordnance was found during this early stage of the redevelopment,” Hilton added.
The final design for the Buala Wharf redevelopment will be influenced by the geotechnical survey results and consultations with local communities, shipping operators, and the Solomon Islands Government.
Australia is supporting two key infrastructure projects in Buala: the redevelopment of the wharf and a new market. Together, these projects are set to boost economic activity in Isabel Province, demonstrating Australia’s commitment to the Solomon Islands’ development through the National Infrastructure Priority Pipeline.
