Dr. Melchior Mataki to succeed Sir Jimmie Rodgers as Secretary to the Prime Minister, confirms PM Jeremiah Manele.
Dr. Melchior Mataki, the current Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of National Planning and Development Coordination, is set to replace Dr. Sir Jimmie Rodgers as the Secretary to the Prime Minister (SPM).
Dr. Mataki has served as the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Environment for many years before being transferred to the Ministry of National Planning and Development Coordination, and now to the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (OPMC).
Speaking to local media upon his arrival from Duabi today (Sunday), Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele confirmed Dr. Mataki’s appointment as Sir Rodgers’ successor. The Prime Minister stated that while Sir Rodgers was initially expected to complete his term, he had been asked to remain in office longer at the Prime Minister’s request.
“As SPM, Sir Rodgers had taken on multiple tasks that far exceeded his day-to-day responsibilities. As a result, he will now take on the role of SPM Special Duties,” Manele said.
The Prime Minister added that there was “nothing unusual” about the conclusion of Sir Rodgers’ tenure as SPM and Dr. Mataki’s transfer to the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (OPMC). Manele’s explanation comes amidst speculation on social media regarding the auditing of the Pacific Games 2023, which was spearheaded by Sir Rodgers.
It is understood that Dr. Mataki’s current contract as Permanent Secretary of Planning lapses this September. Following the conclusion of his contract with Planning, he will assume the full position as Secretary to the Prime Minister.
