Opposition Leader Matthew Wale Propose Delay in Parliament Debate on ESP Audited Report to 2025.
The debate on the Economic Stimulus Package (ESP) audit report has been postponed until 2025. Opposition Leader Matthew Wale introduced a motion in Parliament on October 4 to discuss the ESP audit report. However, he has now shifted his focus to the 2025 budget as a member of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
The PAC, chaired by Central Honiara MP Gordon Darcy Lilo, recently resolved that all audit reports must undergo scrutiny by the committee before Parliament considers them. Lilo stated that the PAC’s inquiry will identify any management discrepancies in the ESP report without assigning blame. This approach ensures transparency and accountability during the review process.
In light of the PAC’s focus, Wale plans to propose another motion in Parliament when it reconvenes on November 15. This motion will formally postpone the debate on the ESP report until the PAC completes its inquiry, expected in the first quarter of next year.
West Are’are MP John Maneniaru, also a PAC member, expressed support for prioritizing the PAC’s inquiry into the ESP report. He emphasized the need for adequate resources to assist the PAC in its efforts. Maneniaru noted that the ESP audit report is of great interest to the public, and any inquiry must be properly supported.
Finance Minister Manasseh Sogavare thanked Wale for recognizing the importance of focusing on the 2025 budget. He stressed the need to address the budget in a timely manner as the year comes to a close. Sogavare, who previously served as Prime Minister and spearheaded the ESP, viewed it as a vital support mechanism for the private sector during the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed gratitude to PAC members for prioritizing the 2025 budget.
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele initially scheduled the discussion of the ESP audit report for November 15. Following the contributions on the motion, Parliament will remain adjourned until that date, with new motions expected to be tabled then.
