Francis Sade Sworn In as Public Service Minister Following Tuhaika’s Resignation.
Francis Sade, MP for North West Guadalcanal and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, was sworn in this afternoon as the new Minister for Public Service by Governor-General David Tiva Kapu. His appointment follows the resignation of John Tuhaika Jnr, MP for Rennell Bellona, from the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) coalition last night. Tuhaika told SBM Online the reasons for his resignation will be made known on the floor of parliament.
Sade, who contested the April 2024 general election as a member of the United Party, has now joined the GNUT coalition, which includes MPs from the OUR Party, People’s First Party, and Kandere Party. His swift appointment to the Cabinet reflects GNUT’s continued efforts to solidify support amid growing political pressure.
Sade’s appointment as Public Service Minister raises questions, particularly concerning his position as Deputy Speaker of Parliament. As Deputy Speaker, Sade plays a crucial role in overseeing parliamentary proceedings, which demands impartiality. Parliamentary laws typically require a Deputy Speaker to vacate the position if appointed to a ministerial role, though it remains unclear whether Sade will continue in both roles or step down from his position as Deputy Speaker.
GNUT maintains its solidarity, rallying its members and emphasizing its commitment to stability and unity. The coalition continues to reaffirm its support for Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele ahead of Monday’s no-confidence motion, which is expected to test the strength of the government.
Political lobbying is continuing behind the scenes as MPs prepare for the critical showdown on Monday. Critics argue that the motion is simply a tactic for MPs to enrich themselves, and they hope this is not the case.
