Government Temporarily Halts Diplomatic Engagements as Nation Prepares for Elections – Critical and Emergency Activities Remain Exempt.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration of the Republic of Kiribati has announced a temporary suspension of diplomatic and official visits until the end of 2024. This decision, communicated by the Office of Te Beretitenti (The President), is being implemented due to the upcoming national elections, with the government entering a caretaker mode.
The Ministry clarified that this move is intended to notify diplomatic missions in advance and manage expectations in light of the numerous visit requests received during this period. While the suspension applies broadly, exceptions will be made for critical, urgent, and emergency activities as well as ongoing projects, which will still require the usual clearance process from relevant offices in Kiribati.
The Kiribati government expressed its deep appreciation to resident diplomatic missions, international organizations, honorary consulates, and countries with which Kiribati maintains formal diplomatic relations for their understanding and cooperation during this period.
The Ministry looks forward to resuming regular diplomatic engagements and official visits from international partners at the start of 2025.
