Solomon Islands Government and PRC Sign Agreement to Launch Auki Road Development.
The Malaita Road Network Project is set to commence following the signing of the Auki Road project agreement between the Solomon Islands Government and the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
At the signing ceremony, held on Thursday, 10th October 2024, in the Cabinet Room at the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Solomon Islands Government was represented by the Minister of Infrastructure Development, Honourable Manasseh Maelanga. His Excellency Cai Weiming represented the PRC. The event was witnessed by Prime Minister Honourable Jeremiah Manele and the Premier of Malaita Province, Honourable Elijah Asilaua.
Prime Minister Manele stated that the signing marked the start of a project that is expected to improve the lives of the people of Malaita Province by enhancing road infrastructure. He highlighted that the people of Malaita deserve better infrastructure and expressed hope that the road would serve as a symbol of progress and partnership.
“The Auki Road project reflects our shared belief that every citizen deserves safe, reliable infrastructure that supports their aspirations and well-being,” said Prime Minister Manele. He also acknowledged the strong partnership between the national government and the PRC, emphasizing the cooperative efforts that have brought the project to fruition.
“This road, which will benefit generations to come, stands as a symbol of what we can accomplish when we work together towards a shared vision for progress,” he added. The Prime Minister also mentioned that the project is one of the key outcomes of his recent state visit to the PRC.
Ambassador Cai Weiming echoed these sentiments, describing the agreement as another demonstration of China’s commitment to supporting infrastructure development in the Solomon Islands. He noted that infrastructure connectivity is an important part of the bilateral relationship and assured continued support from China in areas such as rural development, trade, healthcare, and education.
Premier Elijah Asilaua expressed gratitude on behalf of Malaita Province, thanking both the national government and the PRC for the project. He highlighted the importance of prioritizing rural infrastructure development to improve access to services and enhance the quality of life for the people of Malaita.
The Malaita Road Network Project began with the signing of preliminary documents last year and follows other major projects in the province, including maintenance work at Kilu’ufi Hospital.
