The GIZO Market Manager in the Western Province, Moffat Maeta, has voiced his support for increased representation of women in parliament following the official announcement by the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission of twenty (20) women candidates contesting the 2024 national election on April 17.
Interacting primarily with women in the market, Maeta emphasizes the significant role women play, particularly those from surrounding communities who rely on the Gizo market for their livelihoods.
While acknowledging the Gizo Kolombangara constituency as a trailblazer in electing female representatives, Maeta notes a lack of support prompting women to seek leaders who will amplify their voices.
“I would like to acknowledge Lanelle Tanagnada for her leadership over the past years. She has been instrumental in addressing women’s issues in this country. However, many women have felt left out in her constituency,” stated Maeta.
Highlighting the diversity of vendors and associations in the Gizo market selling vegetables, local foods, and handicrafts, Maeta expresses strong support for rural women facing significant challenges and encourages them to prioritize issues affecting them by supporting female candidates.
Maeta urges voters to select leaders who will effectively represent their interests in parliament and serve as their voice. He calls upon representatives of the Gizo Kolombangara constituency to enhance accommodations for vendors, upgrade market sanitation, address road-related issues, and improve toilet and water facilities.
