GNUT Ready for No-Confidence Motion as Lilo Faces Critical Decision
Parliament convenes today, Monday, 16th December 2024, with a Motion of No Confidence in Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele, as the sole item on the order paper.
In a show of solidarity, members of the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) arrived at Parliament in a bus this morning, projecting unity and confidence ahead of the highly anticipated debate.
Gordon Darcy Lilo, the mover of the motion and MP for Central Honiara, is already in Parliament. There are suggestions that he may seek to defer the motion to another day, or potentially withdraw it altogether. However, the final decision will only become clear once Parliament convenes and the motion is formally tabled.
The GNUT coalition has consistently dismissed the motion as an unnecessary distraction and expressed its readiness to defeat it. “We stand united behind the Prime Minister,” a GNUT spokesperson reaffirmed.
The motion, tabled by Lilo, comes amid GNUT’s assertion of stability and continuity in leadership. Political analysts have noted that GNUT’s strong majority in Parliament positions the government favorably to withstand this challenge.
In related developments, the MP for North West Guadalcanal was sworn in on Saturday as Public Service Minister following the resignation of Tuhaika Junior from GNUT. The MP for NW Guadalcanal, contested as a United Party Member in the April elections. He has also resigned from the United Party, although the party leader has yet to officially acknowledge receiving the resignation letter.
As Parliament begins proceedings today, all eyes will be on the tabling of the motion.
