MOU Signing Sets Stage for Melanesian Teams’ Journey Towards Qualification in the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat has formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) aimed at enhancing football development across the region.
Director General Leonard Louma emphasized the dominance of MSG football teams in the Pacific Games finals, citing recent standout performances by Fiji and Vanuatu at the OFC Men’s Nations Cup as testament to the partnership’s success.
“We are gathered here today to sign a three-year MOU that outlines our collaboration framework with the OFC, recognizing football’s immense popularity and its profound impact on our communities,” stated DG Louma.
Louma expressed optimism that the MOU would facilitate OFC’s collaboration with MSG in leveraging football as a tool for broader development objectives.
“At the MSG Secretariat, we aim to harness football’s popularity and the growing enthusiasm for futsal to promote health, social justice, gender equity, economic inclusion, and political awareness,” he remarked.
He emphasized the role of football and futsal in fostering unity among MSG states and broader Melanesian communities, highlighting their potential to unify and empower.
The signing ceremony signifies a commitment to using sports figures as advocates for positive societal change, aligning football and futsal with development goals that extend beyond the field.
