Motion filed by Central Honiara MP Gordon Darcy Lilo; lobbying intensifies ahead of December 16 debate.
Behind the scene political lobbying is intensifying in the Solomon Islands as a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele is set for debate on Monday, December 16, 2024. The motion was filed by Gordon Darcy Lilo, Member of Parliament for Central Honiara and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee.
In the lead-up to the motion, political lobbying efforts are reportedly taking place as both sides seek to consolidate support among Members of Parliament. The motion’s outcome will determine the future of the government led by Prime Minister Manele.
Parliament is currently focused on debating the 2025 Appropriation Bill 2024 during the Committee of Supply sessions, a critical step in finalizing the country’s fiscal plans. However, the upcoming no-confidence motion has created an air of uncertainty around the government’s stability.
Prime Minister Manele was elected to his position on May 2, 2024, with the backing of 31 legislators in the 50-seat Parliament. His government, referred to as the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT), was formed with the stated aim of fostering national unity and implementing transformative reforms.
The Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (OPMC) has emphasized the government’s focus on its legislative agenda and ongoing priorities despite the impending motion.
