Delay in Opening Attributed to Federation Registration and Safety Concerns.
The National Sports Council (NSC) has issued a press statement clarifying the status of the Iumi Water Sports Park, located at DC Park next to Alligator Creek. The park has not opened since its handover by the National Hosting Authority on May 1, 2024.
According to the NSC, the delay in the park’s opening is due to two main factors. Firstly, the Solomon Islands National Federation for Sailing and the Solomon Islands Outrigger and Canoe Federation have not fulfilled their registration obligations under the Solomon Islands National Sports Council Act, which requires annual registration with the NSC. Despite the NSC’s multiple efforts to facilitate compliance since the beginning of the year, no registration documents have been submitted. The NSC emphasizes the importance of these documents for maintaining governance standards and assessing the activity levels of the sports. The Solomon Islands Outrigger and Canoe Federation recently held its Annual General Meeting and has indicated plans to register with the NSC soon.
Secondly, safety concerns are paramount for the NSC regarding the use of the Iumi Water Sports Park. During the Pacific Games, the venue was equipped with various safety measures to protect participants. However, no safety or sports equipment has been transferred to the NSC as part of the handover process. Given the proximity of Alligator Creek, the NSC has determined that the facility cannot be opened to national federations or the public at this time due to these safety issues.
The NSC looks forward to receiving the necessary sports and safety equipment to facilitate the park’s operations and its eventual opening to the community.
