Coalition Formation and Speculation Surrounding Prime Minister Candidates Heighten Political Anticipation
Political lobbying is intensifying as MPs elect consider candidates for the Prime Minister post and strategize to form the next government following the elections on 17 April 2024. Over the weekend, leaders from four political parties – Solomon Islands Democratic Party, Democratic Alliance Party, Solomon Island United Party (SIUP), and Umi for Change Party – signed a Coalition Agreement. According to a statement from the Group, this signing reflects a commitment to address the calls from the populace for a change in government and leadership. The Group asserts that their collaboration signifies solidarity and a dedication to effect real and meaningful change, inviting independent MPs who campaigned on a platform of change to join them.
CARE commands a total of 13 MPs, while SIUP has seven, totaling 20 MPs together. Meanwhile, the Democratic Coalition Government for Advancement (DCGA) comprises a total of 19 candidates, with 15 from OUR Party, three from People’s First Party and one from Kandere Party. Caretaker Prime Minister and OUR Party Wing Leader, Minister Manasseh Sogavare, in an exclusive interview with Tavuli News, expressed confidence in identifying their candidate for the Prime Minister position. He suggested that the opposing camp, consisting of the CARE Coalition and other parties, might face challenges in selecting their preferred candidate.
Jeremiah Manele might potentially be representing OUR Party (DCGA) and former Opposition Leader Matthew Wale being considered for the other Coalition Group. As negotiations continue, the allegiance of MPs-elect remains uncertain, contributing to the ongoing power struggle. Former Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo also looms as a potential influencer in the political landscape.
The Governor General’s announcement, expected on 30 April 2024, will shed light on the prevailing political situation. Sogavare has not confirmed his interest in retaining the Prime Minister position, stating that the decision lies with the members of his party. Other potential Prime Minister candidates from DCGA include Manasseh Maelanga, while Rick Hou and Peter Kenilorea Jnr are also potential contenders from the CARE Coalition.
