A special event in Honiara on Feb 21, 2025, highlights the importance of indigenous language preservation.
The importance of preserving indigenous languages as part of the UNESCO International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022–2032) will take center stage at a special event in Honiara. Solomon Islands National University (SINU) will host Boldly Taking Our Languages into the Future on February 21, 2025, to mark International Mother Language Day. The event will feature stories about languages from the Solomon Islands, the Pacific region, and beyond. A live Zoom broadcast will make the program accessible to a global audience.
The event, organized by the Solomon Islands Translation Advisory Group (SITAG) and SINU, will highlight the significance of language preservation and cultural identity.
Dr. Michel Kenmogne, Executive Director of SIL Global and a linguistics expert from Cameroon, will deliver the keynote address. He will discuss global language preservation efforts and share insights on protecting minority languages.
The program kicks off at 10:00 AM at SINU Panatina Pavilion, where interactive language exhibits and activities will be available for students, faculty, and the public. A formal session will take place from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM at the SINU FEH Lecture Hall, featuring discussions on language preservation.
