High Commissioner Schwass Commends Media Professionals for Noble Calling and Commitment to Truth and Accountability
At the recent MASI Media Excellence Awards, New Zealand High Commissioner Jonathan Schwass praised journalists for their vital role in society, describing journalism as a “noble calling.” As the keynote speaker, Schwass acknowledged the dedication of media professionals who strive to build a better society by holding the powerful accountable and giving voice to the powerless.
“I can guess that those of you who went into journalism did so not to make a lot of money, but to tell the truth and create a better society,” Schwass said. He empathized with the challenges journalists face, noting, “Sometimes the objectives are hard to reach, or stories don’t work out as planned. We’ve all made mistakes.”
Drawing from his own experience as a former journalist, Schwass encouraged the journalists saying “I know you will not be easily discouraged. Tomorrow, you will be back to try again, because you are professionals in a very old and noble calling.”
The awards, hosted by the Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI) under the theme “Celebrating the Strength and Spirit of Solomon Islands Media,” recognized the resilience and determination of local journalists amid challenges such as limited resources and political pressure. MASI, committed to good journalism and professionalism, aims to inspire media practitioners by acknowledging their hard work and dedication.
The event highlighted the crucial role of media in shaping the cultural identity and community spirit of the Solomon Islands, reinforcing MASI’s mission to support quality journalism across print, radio, TV and online platforms.
