Event Focuses on the Importance of Early Detection and Community Support
Solomon Airlines held an event on October 31 to raise awareness about cancer as part of Pink October, which emphasizes the importance of early detection and community support. The gathering took place at the airline’s Henderson headquarters and included presentations from Dr. Andrew Soma and Mrs. Meltus of the National Referral Hospital’s cancer unit, along with testimonials from local cancer survivors.
Captain Lyndah Tito, a staff member and cancer survivor, shared her experience in the fight against cancer. Her testimony highlighted the importance of resilience and support networks in health care.
“Hearing from experts and survivors has been a reminder of the ongoing need for cancer awareness and community support,” said Monica Utukana, Human Resources Manager at Solomon Airlines.
In support of the initiative, female staff members wore pink ribbons throughout the day, symbolizing solidarity with those affected by cancer.
Cancer is a significant health concern in the Solomon Islands, with increasing incidence rates reported in recent years. According to the National Cancer Registry, cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the country, affecting both men and women across various age groups. Limited access to early detection services and treatment options has exacerbated the issue, making community awareness and support crucial for improving outcomes.
