The Solomon Games concluded in Honiara on Friday 31 March. All of the provinces including Honiara participated in the Games that saw 9 sporting competitions. The sports includes athletics, canoeing (va’a), 3×3 basketball, rugby 7s, netball, volley-ball, beach volley-ball, boxing and taekwando. Spread across 6 sporting venues, the Solomon Games was also seen as an opportunity for organizers to trial out the country’s preparation for the Pacific Games at a smaller scale. Transport, catering and accommodation were the sectors trialed out during the Solomon Games.
A few mishaps were visible with some of the teams at the start of the games where some were without uniforms among other petty issues. The National Sports Council was responsible for the Solomon Games and saw this opportunity as one to identify talents to represent Solomon Islands in the Pacific Games as well. Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare was chief guest at both the opening and closing ceremony of the Solomon Games. “Challenge yourselves to perform, to make your province and our nation proud. Celebrate your successes, your diversity, your achievements, even your disappointments. Unite your spirit, our provinces and our nation’, Sogavare said.
