Four Solomon Islanders receive maritime cadetship scholarships with Pacific Towing for training and future employment.
Four young Solomon Islanders have been awarded maritime cadetship scholarships by Pacific Towing (PacTow), a marine services company based in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The scholarship recipients will undergo a combination of theoretical and practical training, with the goal of graduating as Officers of the Watch. Upon completion of their studies, they will be employed at PacTow’s tug base in Honiara.
The program involves eight months of preliminary study and work experience in Solomon Islands, followed by international training at the Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies in Fiji. The cadets will also gain practical experience through coastal shipping with Consort Express Lines and Swire Shipping, and on PacTow’s tug fleet. This training includes a two-year sea-time period, during which the cadets will assist in vessel operations and emergency procedures.
PacTow has expressed its commitment to addressing the need for a new generation of seafarers in the region. The company is particularly focused on strengthening the maritime workforce in Solomon Islands and has indicated plans to offer additional scholarships in the future. PacTow also highlighted its role in giving back to the region through workforce development, as part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives.
