Her Excellency Jane Waetara highlights inclusive finance and climate action as key priorities
Solomon Islands has reaffirmed its support for the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for Small Islands Developing States (ABAS) at the 4th International Conference on Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) held on Antigua and Barbuda from May 27th to 30th, 2024.
ABAS, hailed as a progressive roadmap for resilient prosperity, obtained praise from Solomon Islands for its sustainable development objectives tailored to small island nations over the next decade. Head of Delegation, Her Excellency Jane Waetara, emphasized ABAS as a catalyst for transformative changes during her address.
Recognizing the ongoing challenges faced by SIDS, particularly in the face of frequent external shocks and climate change, Waetara emphasized the need for inclusive financial structures and international support. Solomon Islands echoed calls for debt restructuring and advocated for a SIDS voice in global financial decision-making.
Waetara welcomed upcoming UN discussions on sea level rise, highlighting Solomon Islands’ vulnerability to climate-related disasters. The country’s commitment to sustainable development was emphasized through its National Development Strategy and forthcoming Voluntary National Review.
Waetara emphasized the importance of solidarity among SIDS and urged proactive steps towards transformative change.
