A milestone in infrastructure development was reached today with the commissioning of the Solomon Islands’ first state-of-the-art domestic seaport passenger terminal in Honiara.
The new terminal is designed to enhance passenger comfort and convenience, with three floors tailored for different uses. The first floor features cafés and shops, the second floor houses a public viewing gallery and ticketing offices, and the third floor is designated for office spaces. Additionally, the facility includes a Domestic Terminal Exit Gatehouse equipped with public toilet facilities, accessible for a small fee.
In welcoming guests at the commissioning ceremony, Solomon Ports CEO acknowledged and thanked the individuals who contributed to the project, many of whom were local professionals. He emphasized the importance of recognizing local talent, noting that the achievement demonstrates the capability of Solomon Islanders to deliver large-scale infrastructure projects.
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele, delivering the keynote address, described the terminal as a landmark achievement and a reflection of the country’s progress in infrastructure development. He urged other state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to draw inspiration from Solomon Ports’ dedication and determination in realizing this project.
Fully funded by the Solomon Islands Ports Authority, the terminal is expected to significantly improve the experience of passengers and support more efficient inter-island travel. The Prime Minister also highlighted the inclusivity of the facility, which ensures accessibility and comfort for all users.
As part of the day’s celebrations, a free concert will be held later in the evening outside the new terminal building. The event will feature popular local artist Seanrii, promising an exciting conclusion to this historic occasion.
Honiara’s port is a key hub for inter-island travel, facilitating daily journeys for thousands of travelers across the country.
