New Facility to Boost Operations of Solomon Islands’ Sports Federations.
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele officially handed over the Sports Legacy Haus to the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands (NOCSI) during a ceremony in East Honiara. The facility, a two-story building with 50 rooms, meeting spaces, and amenities, aims to provide office spaces for the country’s sports federations.
The property, located in Ranadi, was purchased by the National Hosting Authority (NHA) last year from Chengs Hardware and Construction Limited for SBD 34 million. The acquisition addressed time constraints that prevented constructing a new facility on Solomon Islands National University (SINU) land, as originally planned.
The handover complies with Section 35 of the Pacific Games Act 2023, which governs the distribution of non-financial assets after the Games. The decision was reaffirmed in December 2023 by the NHA Board, following agreements made with the Pacific Games Council and the former government.
Previously, only three of the nearly 30 sports federations in Solomon Islands had dedicated office spaces. The Sports Legacy Haus now ensures all federations, including non-Olympic ones, have the infrastructure to support their operations.
Prime Minister Manele expressed gratitude to international donors, particularly the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, for their financial support in upgrading the facility. Saudi Arabia was the second-largest contributor to the 2023 Pacific Games, following China.
The Sports Legacy Haus is expected to enhance the growth of Solomon Islands’ sports community.
