Delegation Meets with Political Leaders, Youth, and Community Representatives as Part of Efforts to Navigate Recent Unrest.
A high-level mission from the Forum Troika Plus is currently visiting New Caledonia from October 27 to 29, 2024. This visit follows a mandate from Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders during their recent summit in Tonga. Solomon Islands Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Peter Shanel Agovaka, is part of the team.
Observational Mission
This mission is strictly observational; it aligns with requests from the Government of New Caledonia and follows guidelines set by the French State and the New Caledonian government.
On October 28, the leaders met with various stakeholders in a process called Talanoa. Initially, they spoke with H.E. Louis Mapou, the President of New Caledonia, and other government officials. Afterward, they visited the Pacific Community (SPC) campus, where they engaged with members of political parties, the health sector, private sector, and youth organizations.
Engaging with the Community
During these meetings, participants shared their views on the socio-political climate in New Caledonia. Additionally, they expressed their hopes for the future.
Troika Plus Mission also held discussions with representatives from churches, schools, and women’s groups. Moreover, the leaders also met with mayors from towns across New Caledonia.
Conclusion of the Mission
The mission concluded their meeting with the President of New Caledonia, the French High Commissioner, and the Ambassador for the Pacific. The information gathered during this mission will be compiled into a report for PIF Leaders.
Forum Chair and Prime Minister of Tonga, Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, emphasized the importance of the mission. He noted that the leaders have kept the people of New Caledonia in their thoughts since recent unrest. “This mission shows the value of coming together to help each other,” he stated.
Minister Shanel Agovaka will return on October 30, 2024, after the mission concludes.
